ACL Reconstruction Rehabilitation

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is located within the knee joint and provides stability during sport and strenuous activity. Commonly ACL injuries are the result of sports injuries, where a sudden pivoting movement of the knee, or sudden deceleration of the body puts excessive force through the tissue. Your ACL can also tear due to injury in other environments such as work or accidents.

It’s paramount that optimal care and attention is given to maximise recovery, reduce the risk of reinjury, and unlock your true performance potential.

It’s paramount that optimal care and attention is given to maximise recovery, reduce the risk of reinjury, and unlock your true performance potential.

Typical recovery time for an ACL injury is around 12-months, and reinjury can occur within 5 years in up to 20% of cases. At Worcester Physiotherapy, we believe it’s essential to get your recovery right the first time around, and reduce reinjury risk. Poor rehabilitation outcomes can produce up to a 33% chance of reinjury (Webster and Feller, 2019), but high quality rehab programmes can reduce that risk rate to 10% (Grindem et al, 2016). The exciting thing about our plan is that it exceeds the standards set to achieve that reduction in risk. It is designed to help you function at an optimal level, with minimal chance of reinjury occurring.

When it comes to ACL injuries we don’t believe in quick fixes. Our ACL Rehab & Performance Plan is only for those who want the BEST opportunity to recover to the highest level, and who are willing to commit to an intense rehabilitation plan. Our extensive experience of treating ACL injuries leads us to believe this will give you the best prospect of achieving the most beneficial outcomes.

5 PHASE APPROACH

Phase 1 aims:
Rehab starts to become a little more targeted and intense! We’ll start to restore muscle strength, balance and coordination through tailored exercises that will get progressively more strenuous. We will still be very mindful of your symptoms and will ‘listen to your knee’ to reduce the risk of pain or swelling returning. In this pha e you’ll continue to see us in clinic twice per month, with a virtual check-in on the alternate weeks.
Phase 2 aims:
We can discuss several options here to ensure a high level of performance is maintained and monitored, to reduce the risk of injury. We provide multiple services to screen you going forward, or we can implement a bespoke Strength & Conditioning support service. These options will be discussed nearer the time.
